The Temple of Zeus was the largest in mainland Greece. Inside stood two colossal gold and ivory statues: one of Zeus, and one of Roman Emperor Hadrian. Construction began in 515 B.C. Political turmoil delayed its completion nearly 700 years. Emperor Hadrian finished it in A.D. 131.
